FM Baerbock Becomes First German Minister To Visit Since Start Of War

UKRAINE

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has become the first German minister to visit Ukraine since the start of the Russo-Ukrainian war. While Germany continues to provide military support to Ukraine and advocates for EU sanctions on Russia, there was previously something of a diplomatic falling-out between Kyiv and Berlin over the Zelenskyy gov'ts refusal to invite German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier due to his 'past close ties to Russia' according to the Ukrainians.

  • This spat was seemingly ended last week, when Zelenskyy invited Steinmeier, Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and the entire German gov't to Kyiv. Scholz is not expected to travel to Kyiv any time soon according to Politico's Hans von der Burchard.
  • Baerbock visited the village of Bucha - site of a Russian massacre of Ukrainian civilians - during her trip, and is set to meet her Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba later today.
