FM Kuleba Strikes Positive Tone Following Call w/Chinese Counterpart

UKRAINE

Finbar Bermingham at SCMP tweets thread on Chinese FM Wang Yi's call with Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba:

  • "Chinese readout of Wang-Kuleba call, with a veiled dig at the West "China does not seek geopolitical self-interest, does not have the mentality of watching the fire from across the river, and will not do anything to pour oil on the fire."
  • "Wang: "China is willing to uphold an objective and impartial position and continue to play a constructive role to this end in its own way. We believe the Ukrainian side is wise enough to make a choice on its own that is in the fundamental interests of its people."
  • "Kuleba: "The Ukrainian side values China's international influence and prestige and is willing to maintain communication with China, hoping that China will continue to play an important role for a ceasefire to stop the war." Kuleba also tweeted very positively about the call. Reminder: EU is seeking talks between Xi and Zelensky, which have not yet been forthcoming. "
The tone of Kuleba's response to the call stands in contrast to that taken by many Ukrainain gov't officials with Western leaders. With China, Ukraine clearly seeking not to antagonise Beijing given gov'ts close relations with Russia, whereas conversations with Western gov'ts often take a more abrupt tone as Ukraine seeks supplies and weaponry to fight Russian forces.
