FM Qin: Hopes UKR-RU Peace Talks Resume "As Soon As Possible"

CHINA

Comments from Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang hitting wires following a call with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.

  • Qin's comments, per Reuters: "China hopes Ukraine, Russia remain hopeful of dialogue, negotiation, 'no matter how difficult or challenging.'"
  • Qin: "China hopes Ukraine, Russia will not close door to a political solution."
  • Qin: "Hopes all parties will remain calm, rational and restrained, resume peace talks as soon as possible."
  • Qin: "China is concerned about the escalation of the Ukraine crisis, which may get out of hand."
  • Qin's remarks comes ahead of a key week of diplomacy where Chinese President Xi Jinping is widely expected to travel to Moscow for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and hold his first call with Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky.
  • Western officials remain sceptical that China can operate as a credible mediator in the conflict but a Chinese-brokered deal to restore diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran last week broadsided US diplomats and signalled Beijing's increased international clout and willingness to engage in diplomacy.
  • According to US officials, Ukraine has yet to confirm a call between Xi and Zelensky.
