FM Says Talks Continue; EU Upbeat, But Wider JCPoA Atmosphere Downbeat

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian tweets: "In agreement with [EU Rep for Foreign Affairs & Security] Mr. Borrell, [EU chief negotiatr] Mr. Mora's visit to Tehran and his talks with my colleague [Iranian negotiator] Mr. Bagheri were a second chance to focus on initiatives to resolve the remaining issues of the Vienna talks. A good and reliable agreement is available if the U.S. makes its political decision and abides by its commitments. Calls continue."

  • Earlier, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Josep Borrell claimed that the talks between EU and Iranian teams in Tehran had 'unblocked' some issues around the Iran nuclear deal (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, JCPoA). Borrell said, "There is a perspective of reaching a final agreement"
  • However, wider atmosphere around talks remains downbeat. Ziad Daoud at Bloomberg tweets: "Fading expectations that Iran nuclear talks will resume -- JPMorgan no longer foresees rising Iran oil output. Why? - US midterm elections in 6 months raise political cost of compromise. - High oil price & rising exports take economic pressure off Iran"
