HONG KONG: Following the reported passage of the Hong Kong national security law
through the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (SCNPC),
Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam is set to deliver a video message to the
UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. Lam due to speak at 1040CET (0940BST, 0440ET)
- While the SCNPC was passing the law Lam refused to comment, saying it would be
"inappropriate" for her remark on a law that had not passed in Hong Kong.
- UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said in mid-June that
the national security law ""must fully comply with China's human rights
obligations".
- The UK Foreign Secretary, who has promised a 'path to citizenship' to British
National (Overseas) passport holders in Hong Kong should the national security
law restrict individuals rights issued the following comment: "We are deeply
concerned by unconfirmed reports that Beijing has passed the national security
law. This would be a grave step. Once we have seen the full legislation, we will
