For Min Doubts Over China Peace Plan; Def Min Says 18 Tanks To Ukraine

Wires carrying comments from German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, speaking at the UN in New York City as part of the UNSC meeting on the anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. On China's 14-point 'peace plan' for the war, Baerbock states that "the Chinese position paper contains many well-known positions; it is important that China warns against nuclear escalation.'

  • Baerbock: 'There is a peace plan that 141 states supported yesterday [the UN resolution condemning the invasion], China could have used its influence on Russia to convince it of this plan.'
  • Baerbock: 'Those who speak of peace must not mean submission.'
  • Her comments come after a spat with deputy Chinese envoy to the UN, Dai Bing on 23 Feb. Dai said the West was 'adding fuel to the fire' by providing Ukraine with weaponry. Baerbock retorted angrily, stating that“The truth is that if Russia stops fighting, the war will end, If Ukraine stops this fighting, Ukraine ends.”
Separately, the Defence Minstry has announced that Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has confirmed that 18 rather than 14 Leopard 2 A6 main battle tanks will be provided to Ukraine from Bundeswehr stocks. Comes on the back of Poland delivering earlier today the first of the 14 Leopard 2's it is donating to Ukraine.
