For Min-Gov't Will 'Take Strong Measures' If US Sells Taiwan Missile Tech

CHINA

  • Comes after the US committed to providing a USD100mn deal that will allow Taiwan to "sustain, maintain, and improve" its Patriot missile defence system.
  • On Monday, US Defense Security Cooperation Agency stated that the deal would "help improve the security of the recipient and assist in maintaining political stability, military balance, economic and progress in the region".
  • Comes a week after Qin Gang, China's ambassador to the US, overtly brought up the possibility of a war between the US and China over Taiwan in an interview with NPR. Qin stated that “If the Taiwanese authorities, emboldened by the United States, keep going down the road for independence, it most likely will involve China and the United States, the two big countries, in a military conflict”. It is very rare for a Chinese official to speak so openly and directly about the prospect of miliitary conflict with the US.
