RUSSIA
The Russian Foreign Ministry has threatened a response that will 'protect its national interests' after Lithuania imposed a ban on the supply of goods subject to EU tariffs to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. On Sunday, Vilnius put the ban into force that prohibits the transport of goods that are subject to EU sanctions including coal, metals, construction materials and advanced technology through Lithuania from the Russian mainland to Kalininigrad.
- Kaliningrad Governor Anton Alikhanov stated that banned goods account for 50% of the region's imports brought in largely via rail through Lithuania and Poland, the two EU nations that border Kaliningrad.
- Moscow called the act 'provocative," and "hostile," and threatened a response unless the cargo transit is restored immediately.
- The highly-militarised region is home to the Russian Baltic Fleet, while the Russian gov't has stated that it also houses Iskander nuclear-capable missiles.
- The Baltic states, which have been some of the most vocal opponents of Putin and proponents of hardline sanctions on Moscow have been subject to repeated cyberattacks that they blame on Moscow. An increase in this form of activity could ramp up in response to Lithuania's supply ban.
