Forecasts Highlight Active Hurricane Season for the US Gulf

OIL

Forecasts highlight an active hurricane season for the US Gulf this summer according to Jeff Berardelli, chief meteorologist for WFLA-TV.

  • “What stands out about this season is steering. Last spring the models clearly projected a recurving storm track for peak hurricane season. That ended up being correct. This year there’s a robust model consensus that the average storm track will be into the Caribbean,” Berardelli said via X.
  • See chart for details to highlight hurricane direction (steering) heading across the Caribbean rather than largely pulling away last season.
  • “One thing we look for, beyond the record warm water, is the orientation of the warmer than normal water in the Atlantic. The horseshoe pattern is classic right now and typically corresponds with active hurricane seasons,” Berardelli added.
