Foreign Minister Says Sweden NATO Entry “A Mere Technicality”

HUNGARY
  • Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said the war in Ukraine and Sweden's NATO entry will be high on the agenda of the organisation's summit in Vilnius on Tuesday and Wednesday. "Hungary's position is clear: peace must be achieved in Ukraine as soon as possible to save lives," he said on Facebook.
  • On Sweden’s NATIO bid, he said "Concluding the ratification process is a mere technicality." Hungary’s position has been that they would ratify Sweden’s NATO entry as soon as Turkey signals readiness to do so – which they did yesterday evening.
  • The debate on the rule of law can only progress if the "politically motivated discourse" in the EU is replaced by an "unbiased, international constitutional dialogue," departing Justice Minister Judit Varga said as per MTI. Ahead of a meeting of EU affairs ministers in Brussels, she said that the leaders of member states had ruled out a review of the bloc's long-term budget in 2020. As a reminder, Judit Varga said she will step aside as Justice Minister at the end of July to lead Prime Minister Orban’s campaign for next year’s European Parliament elections.
  • EURHUF starts the session 0.3% in the red following yesterday’s 0.8% move lower. The cross now sits 2.72% off last week’s high. Initial support to watch lies at 376.97, the Jun 15 high.
  • Prime Minister Viktor Orban will attend the NATO summit with Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto and Defence Minister Kristof Szalay-Bobrovniczky. There are no major economic releases scheduled for today, or for the remainder of the week.
