Foreign Policy Success Sets Biden Apart From DeSantis

US

A successful week of diplomacy in Europe appears to have boosted President Biden against his perceived closest 2024 rival, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL), according to betting markets.

  • Biden's diplomatic trip to Europe has widened the gap between Biden and DeSantis from 2% at the start of the week to 7% today.
  • DeSantis, appearing to recognise his foreign policy blindspot, told Fox News this week that the Biden administration has "no clear strategic objective" in Ukraine and critised Biden's “blank-check policy.”
  • The Hill writes that Ukraine is a topic that DeSantis has "only addressed sparingly in the past," preferring to keep to safer ground on "culture war issues."
  • The Hill notes that although foreign policy is often limited concern to US voters it is, "one that could come up in a 2024 Republican primary contest that is expected to feature a slew of candidates with prior experience on the international stage — including former President Trump, whose “America First” framework largely redefined the GOP’s approach to foreign policy."
