Forint Underperforms EM Peers as EURHUF Rally Continues

HUF

EURHUF has extended last week’s move higher with bulls now eyeing gains toward the 386.00 handle and the 389.26 July 07 high further out. Notably, PLNHUF sits at its highest level since December 2022, with PLN rallying alongside global equities to reflect the ongoing improvement in the US economic backdrop and fading chances of a hard landing. The wider move lower in HUF since mid-July has seen PLN overtake HUF as the CE3 currency with the greatest spot returns against the EUR YTD (See image below).

  • Price action today puts the forint close to the bottom of the EM pile, despite no obvious domestic drivers and a broader risk-on tone in global markets (evidenced by the uptick in major equity indices and downtick in the likes of USD and JPY).
