Former First Minister Set To Give Testimony Against Sturgeon

SCOTLAND

Scotland's former First Minister Alex Salmond is set to deliver his testimony to a Scottish Parliament committee investigating the Scottish gov'ts handling of harassments complaints against him. Salmond has alleged that senior figures surrounding incumbent First Minister Nicola Sturgeon launched a conspiracy against him to destroy his political career.

  • While this committee hearing may see some explosive testimony, the greater threat to FM Sturgeon's position comes from an inquiry into whether she broke the ministerial code in not reporting private meetings she held with Salmond while an investigation against him was underway.
  • Should James Hamilton, Ireland's former director of public prosecutions, rule that she did break the ministerial code it could pave the way for her resignation just weeks/months ahead of the 6 May Scottish parliament election.
  • This in turn could have a major impact on the prospect of a second Scottish independence referendum. A below-expectations result for Sturgeon's Scottish National Party (not winning an outright majority) could set back the cause of Scottish independence for several years to come.
