Former GOP Senator Perdue Confirms Run For Georgia Governorship

US

Former Republican US senator from Georgia David Perdue has officially announced his intention to run for the GOP's nomination for the Georgia governorship in 2022. Perdue served a single term as senator, and was ousted after a narrow loss to Democrat Jon Ossoff in the January 2021 run-off election.

  • Perdue will challenge incumbent Republican Governor Brian Kemp for the GOP nomination, and has the backing of former US President Donald Trump.
  • Trump has frequently criticised Kemp for his percieved mishandling of the presidential election in Georgia in 2020, which Trump lost but frequently claims was subject to voter fraud. Kemp refused to assist Trump in blocking the confirmation of the presidential election result, earning the ire of Trump and his supporters.
  • Kemp or Perdue are likely face off against Democrat Stacey Abrams in the 2022 gubernatorial race. Abrams narrowly lost to Kemp in the 2018 election, and previously served as the minority leader in the Georgia House of Representatives.
  • The Georgia gubernatorial race is likely to be one of the most closely observed of the 2022 mid-terms. Firstly, the GOP primaries, as an indication of whether Kemp's incumbency bonus or Perdue's Trump endorsement is enough to win over the Republican grassroots. Secondly, whether the Democrats can maintain the momentum in the southern state that saw them take its electoral college votes and two US Senate seats in the 2020/21 election.
