ITALY
ITALY: Former PM Matteo Renzi's decision to leave the centre-left Democratic
Party (PD) to form a new movement is unlikely to scupper new governing coalition
in short term.
- Renzi, unpopular with the left of the PD, is looking to mirror French Pres.
Macron's pro-EU, liberal, centrist En Marche! movement, and is set to take
around 30 deputies from PD into new bloc.
- However, with major political divisions evident in Italian society, a new
centrist party under Renzi would only garner around 3-8% support according to
opinion polls.
- Over the longer term should Renzi's party refuse to work with PD, or vice
versa, after future elections it could make forming a centre-left government to
keep right-wing League out of power more difficult.
