Fox Reporter: Biden To Hold Face-To-Face Meeting With President Xi

US-CHINA

Edwards Lawrence at Fox News has reported that President Biden will hold a face-to-face meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at an unspecified time in the future.

  • Laurence: "NSC Spokesperson John Kirby tells me President Biden will not only have a call with Chinese President Xi, but there will also be another face to face meeting between the two world leaders. He could not give me a timeframe for the call or the meeting."
  • Biden responded to a shouted question yesterday following his White House debt limit remarks confirming he plans to meet with Xi at some point, saying: "whether it's soon or not, but we will be meeting."
  • It has been six months since the two leaders spoke with no indication from Beijing that a meeting may be on the cards. Chinese MFA spokesperson Wang Wenbin said in March: “Communication [with the United States] should not be carried out for the sake of communication."
  • Biden and Xi's most recent face-to-face at the G20 Summit in Bali, in November, led to an easing of tensions following former Speaker Nancy Pelosi's trip to Taiwan.
