France’s ASN Points Out Risks of Reactor Phase Outs

POWER

France’s nuclear watchdog ASN in its latest review found areas of improvement on the country’s nuclear safety amid reactor stops especially regarding fire risks and the spread of radioactive substances, ASN said in the conclusion reports of the periodic reviews of basic nuclear installations.

  • ASN supports continuing the dismantling of BNIs Nos. 32 and 54, as long as the improvement plans are implemented on time and planned work over the next ten years is completed to significantly reduce risks.
  • EDF must finish checking all 56 French reactors for corrosion by 2025, with inspections during planned outages. The utility said last December that corrosion inspections and repairs might extend planned reactor outages in 2024 and 2025 by around 30 days.
