French new car sales dropped by 3.4% on the year to 1.75mn in 2024, while for the first time in years, the EV market showed no growth, with its share remaining flat at 16.8%, recent data from the French government show.

  • Additionally, the share of electric and plug-in hybrid engines represents 25.2% of sales in 2024, compared to 25.7% in 2023.
  • Plug-in hybrid car sales dropped in 2024 to 147,100 units, down from 162,800 in 2023, with market share falling from 9.0% to 8.4%.
  • Diesel engine market share continues to decline, dropping to 7.2% in 2024 from 9.5% in 2023. Petrol engines also saw a sharp decrease, falling from 37% to 30.2%.
  • Meanwhile, non-rechargeable hybrid gasoline engines have surged, becoming the dominant engine with a 33.4% share in 2024, up from 23.1% in 2023.
  • Furthermore, the average CO2 emissions of new cars in 2024 dropped to 93.6 g/km, down from 96.2 g/km in 2023, due to a significant decline in thermal petrol car registrations, the government added.
