POWER: French Hydro Stocks Rebound to End Eight-Week Downward Trend

French hydropower reserves last week – calendar week 51 – increased by 0.2 percentage points to 71% of capacity to end their eight-week downward trend, while narrowing the surplus to the five-year average, RTE data showed.
- Stocks decreased sharply by 5.27 points the week prior.
- French hydropower stocks narrowed the surplus to the five-year average to 2.8 points last week, compared with 3.1 points the week before.
- Reserves also narrowed the deficit to last year’s levels to 5.9 points, compared with a deficit of 7.4 points the week prior.
- French nuclear generation last week declined by 3.09GW to 47.90GW.
- Hydropower output from reservoirs fell by 1.57GW last week to 1.27GW. Generation from run-of-river decreased by 662MW to 5.13GW, with output from pumped storage down by 752MW to 1.10GW.
- Offshore wind output last week rose by 314MW to 1.02GW, with Onshore wind rising to 9.64GW from 51.6GW the week prior. Solar PV output edged up 141MW to 1.21GW.
- Power demand in France last week decreased to 60.3GW from 65.12GW the week before.
- Precipitation in the hydro-intensive region of Grenoble last week totalled 17.6mm, below the seasonal average of around 19.2mm.
- Looking ahead, the latest weather forecast for Grenoble for this week suggested precipitation will be at 0mm until picking on 2 January, compared with the seasonal normal of around 3.2 mm/d.
- The latest 6-10 day ECMWF weather forecast for Paris suggested mean temperatures have been revised up on the day by as much as 1.5C over 28 December to 1 January. Temperatures are expected to remain below the norm until 29 December before flipping above the next day and remaining relatively inline until 4 January.
- French nuclear availability is forecast to average around 53.2GW for the remainder of this week, with the average increased by around 2GW next week, Reuters data showed.
- Nuclear fleet availability stood at 84% as of 27 December, RTE data showed, cited by Bloomberg.
Wind output in France is forecast to fall to 0.823GW on Saturday from 1.09GW forecasted for Friday according to SpotRenewables. But will pick up next week to be between 8-65% load factors over 30 December-3 January.
