French Hydropower Reserves Fall WoW

POWER

French hydropower reserves last week – week 31 – declined to 86.6% of capacity, or 3.109TWh, down by 0.45 percentage points on the week, RTE data showed.

  • Reservoir levels narrowed the surplus to the five-year average to 10.18 points, down from 11.22 points the week before. Stocks remained 3.45 points above 2023 levels.
  • French power demand averaged 43.41GW last week, up from 42.68GW the week before.
  • French hydropower output from reservoirs last week was broadly stable on the week at 1.57GW.
  • Nuclear generation last week was also broadly stable at 40.41GW.
  • Combined onshore and offshore wind output edged down by 127MW on the week to 2.42GW, while solar PV output edged higher by 151MW to 4.45GW, Entso-E data showed.
  • Looking forward, precipitation in the hydro-intensive region of Grenoble is forecast to be low this week, unlikely to support inflows into reserves.
  • The latest ECMWF weather forecast suggested mean temperatures in Paris this week will remain above or in line with the seasonal normal, likely to support further demand for cooling.
  • France’s hydrological balance is forecast to decline this week but to increase from the start of next week, ending on 20 August at balance of around 2,818GWh.
