French Nuclear Availability Recovers

French nuclear output exceeded 40GW for the first time in nine months this weekend, as EdF ramped up production at several reactors.

  • French nuclear output peaked at 41.2GW on Monday morning, data from entso-e show.
  • The head of the country's CRE energy watchdog had said on Friday that France's nuclear fleet was expected to reach a production capacity of 40 GW "next month", according to Reuters.
  • EDF has faced an unprecedented number of outages at its reactors this year, reducing nuclear output to a 30-year low, just as Russia's war on Ukraine hit Europe's energy supplies.
  • Increased nuclear availability will weigh on France’s power prices, that have been supported by a cold snap. The French Epex Spot base-load index closed at €465.49/MWh for Monday Delivery.
