Reuters carrying comments from two Israeli officials expressing optimism there is a "real chance" of a ceasefire-for-hostage deal with Hamas.
- One Israeli official said the "proposal put forward by Hamas includes a very significant breakthrough... As far as we are concerned we can proceed to a hostage deal, it depends on [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu."
- MNI's Political Risk team noted earlier today that, "a breakthrough in talks to secure a ceasefire appears closer than at any point in recent weeks."
- A ceasefire is also likely to assist in defusing tensions between Israel and Lebanon-based Hezbollah, as rocket fire and border skirmishes continue to risk escalating into a full-blown war.
- Hezbollah’s deputy leader, Sheikh Naim Qassem, said in an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday: “If there is a ceasefire in Gaza, we will stop without any discussion.”
- Time of Israel reported yesterday: "Hezbollah’s participation in the Israel-Hamas war has been as a “support front” for its ally, Palestinian terror group Hamas, Qassem said, and “if the war stops, this military support will no longer exist.”"
