GBP Jittery But Holds Firmer Levels Ahead of Expected Brexit Announcement

GBP
MNI (London)
  • GBP enthusiasm seen taking a slight knock back as reports suggest some last minute deal negotiations, fish being mentioned, but a deal is still expected to be announced.
  • GBP/USD edged to $1.3581, currently back around $1.3565, whilst EUR/GBP trades back toward Gbp0.9000, having managed to break below in early Europe, posting a low of Gbp0.8990.
  • PM Johnson press conference was suggested by the BBC for 0800GMT but suggestions have been moved back to 1000GMT. Very difficult to pin a time on this event but most expect an announcement this morning.
  • Focus moves across to ratification by UK and EU parliaments. UK parliament expected to be recalled for a vote next week, whilst the EU only likely to ratify into the new year but EU likely to smooth any disruption through Dec31.
