UK DATA: GDP Slumps in March on Service Sector Decline
- UK March GDP -0.1% m/m, despite 0.9% m/m rise in manufacturing
- UK March Services -0.1% m/m, reversing two months of increase
Strong first quarter GDP growth came despite a downturn in March, with
the service sector dampening activity. Continuing weakness in services
was masked by Brexit-related strength in manufacturing in the opening
months of Q1. Financial and insurance activities fell by another 0.1% in
March, the 15th consecutive month without an increase, the longest
stretch since records began in 1997. Fiinancial activity declined by
2.2% in the three months to March over the same period of 2018, the 22nd
decline on this measure.
