German Def Min Passes On Tank Q, Promises Air Defence Systems To Ukraine

NATO

Delivering doorstep comments at the NATO defence ministers' meeting in Brussels, German Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht confirms stry reported yesterday that one IRIS-T air defence system has been delivered to Ukraine, and that three more will be provided to the Ukrainian armed forces next year.

  • Also states that Germany will deliver a 'significant contribution' to the EU training mission to Ukraine.
  • Lambrecht dodges question on western European tank deliveries to Ukraine, says that 'Ukraine urgently needs air defence systems and artillery, this is exactly what Germany is delivering'.
  • Lambrecht: 'It is important that NATO's routine nuclear exercises can take place and that we stick with our scheduled drills'.
  • Germany has come in for criticism for its perceived unwillingness or inability to deliver modern tanks to Ukraine. Yesterday, Reuters reported that Rheinmetall will deliver eopard 2A4 battle tanks and Buffalo armoured recovery vehicles to Czechia in a swap scheme to provide a flow of weaponry to Ukraine.
