German Def Min: We Need Intensive NATO Dialogue w/Turkey

Speaking ahead of a meeting of European Union defence ministers, German Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht states that NATO must hold an 'intensive dialogue' with Turkey regarding Sweden and Finland's applications to join the alliance.

  • Yesterday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan doubled down on his earlier comments that Turkey would not back membership for either Nordic nation.
  • Erdogan stated in a presser that "Neither of these countries have a clear, open attitude towards terrorist organisation...How can we trust them?" He added that delegations from each country should not bother traveling to Ankara.
  • Sets up for significant NATO powers, most notable the US and UK, to seek to place significant pressure on Erdogan to change his stance. Erdogan likely to demand significant restrictions on activities of anti-Turkish gov't and Kurdish groups in both Sweden and Finland as price of admission to the alliance.
