German Defence Min-No New Position On Leopard Tanks To Ukraine

UKRAINE

Comments from German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius hitting wires. States that there is, "No new position on Leopard tanks." Major international focus on whether Germany will export/allow the re-export of Leopard 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine. If a sizeable number of tanks are provided to Ukraine it could make a major difference in the outcome of the war, and indeed the war's duration. Could allow Ukrainian troops to retake and, crucially, hold territory in the south and east of the country.

  • Pistorius: "NATO must not become a party in Ukraine war. But NATO is supporting Ukraine, and Germany is in the leading group doing this."
  • Pistorius: "We will be able to act very quickly if there is a positive decision on Leopard tanks."
  • Pistorius: 'There is no disunity on the tank issue."
  • Poland has stated that it will submit an official request to re-export some of its Leopard 2 tanks to Germany, but would prefer to do this with a coalition of allies.
