German Foreign Min Launches Critique Of Polish Court Decision

Germany's Foreign Minister Heiko Maas tweets the following:

  • "Poland: If a country politically chooses to be part of the EU, it must also fully implement the agreed rules. Being a member of [the] EU means pursuing common values, benefiting from a strong single market & speaking with one voice. But it also means that we adhere to common rules that form the foundation of the [EU]– with all the consequences. [The] EU Commission has our full support for its task of making European law applicable throughout the EU."
  • His comments come after the Polish Constitutional Tribunal ruled yesterday that having EU law supreme to Polish law was incompatible with the Polish constitution. Given the fundamental nature of the supremacy of EU law within the bloc, the ruling risks a major deterioration in the already frosty relations between Warsaw and Brussels, and judging by Maas' comments between the Polish gov't and a number of other member state gov'ts as well.
