German Gas Demand Fell to 26.5% Below Normal Last Week

German natural gas consumption in the week to 19 May fell 5.8% from the previous week and was 26.5% below the 2018-21 average, Bnetza data showed. The rise was driven by a 7.2.% decline in industrial demand and a 1.6% fall in demand from households and small businesses.

  • Industrial gas consumption stood at 1,132GWh/d last week compared to 2023 levels of 1,050GWh and 19.2% below the 2018-21 average.
  • Demand from households and small businesses edged lower to 425GWh/d last week, from 497GWh/d in 2023 and 40.8% below the 2018-21 average.
  • German gas demand stood 19.5% below the 2018-21 average the week prior.
  • Natural gas inventories in Germany have risen to 71.44% full on 21 May from 69.70% a week earlier but with net injections falling back below normal in the last week.
