German Government Approval Falls Amid Dispute With Ukraine
GERMANY
Approval of the government of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz continues to fall amid accusations from Ukraine that the top officials have failed to disentangle the government from ties to Russia.
- Scholz today reiterated comments suggesting that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksy is responsible for a breakdown of relations between Berlin and Kyiv.
- Hans Von Der Burchard of Politico: 'Chancellor Olaf Scholz doubled down on his criticism of the Zelenskyy's decision to declare German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier unwelcome in Ukraine. "It is a problem that the President of Germany was disinvited. And that stands in the way" (of Scholz visiting Kyiv).'
- Morning Consult currently tracks Scholz's approval at 38% (net -16) and shows that nearly 60% of Germans now believe the country is on the 'wrong track.'
