German VC Habeck-'We Can Manage This Winter If NS 1 Turned Off'

ENERGY SECURITY

Wires and social media carrying comments from German Vice Chancellor and Economy Minister Robert Habeck asserting that Germany can 'manage this winter if Nord Stream I is stopped'.

  • Comes in the wake of Russian Deputy PM Alexander Novak's threat that Russia could cut off gas supplies to Europe over the war in Ukraine, stating that, “We have every right to take a matching decision and impose an embargo on gas pumping through the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline.”
  • The German gov't has already signalled that the yet-to-be-certified Nord Stream II pipeline - running parallel to NS 1 - will not be coming online as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
  • Yesterday, Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that for Germany the prospect of sanctioning Russian energy exports was not feasible due to the German economy's reliance on Russian gas.
