Germany Committed to Gas Demand Reduction to Refill Storage

NATURAL GAS

Germany is committed to maintaining "ambitious" gas consumption reduction targets at the EU level to help refill storage before next winter according to Sven Giegold, state secretary at the German economy ministry.

  • "We must not be lulled into a false sense of security -- we must continue to work with all determination," Giegold said following a meeting of EU energy ministers on 27 Feb.
  • "We must continue to pay attention to our energy consumption, and continue and increase our savings efforts,"
  • Germany is targeting continued gas saving of at least 20%. The EU is considering continuing its voluntary 15% gas demand reduction target which expires by the end of March to help reach the 90% storage target by 1 Nov.
