Germany Considering Aid for VNG

NATURAL GAS

Germany is considering up to 2bn euros of aid for German gas importer VNG according to Handelsblatt. Falling Russian gas supplies have pressured company credit lines as it procures higher priced replacements.

  • It comes not long after German utility company Uniper has been in bailout talks with the German government because of the higher priced gas situation. Current reports place the potential German government stake in Uniper at around 30%.
  • The German cabinet approved a law earlier this week to give the government the power to bail out utilities if they falter under rising energy prices.
  • Fears across Europe are the gas situation will increasingly become worse if Russia keep reducing flows to the region.
