Speaking at a meeting of EU defence ministers in Brussels, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said earlier this morning that the damage to two undersea communications cables running between Germany and Finland was likely an act of "sabotage", saying that "no one believes that the cable was damaged by accident". Pistorius said that the "defence situation in Europe is not only military, but also hybrid", and that European nations "must better protect infrastructure and respond to such attacks".
- Pistorius, appointed to the Ministry of Defence in Jan 2023, has risen in political prominence in recent days. Over the weekend, Spiegelreported that some lawmakers from the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) have called for the party to name Pistorius as its chancellor candidate for the early federal election, likely to take place on 23 Feb.
- Incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz has indicated his intention to run for the chancellery again, but opinion polling showing the SPD trailing the main opposition conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has raised concerns among some in the party that sticking with Scholz could damage the party's electoral prospects.
- Recent opinion polling shows that with Scholz as SPD chancellor candidate, the CDU's Freidrich Merz leads in preferred chancellor polling with 32% support. The Greens' Robert Habeck is second on 20%, with Scholz trailing in third with 16%. Conversely, Pistorius leads Merz by 39% to 25% when the defence minister is offered as a possible chancellor.
