Germany-Jets To Ukraine 'Not An Issue For Us'

UKRAINE

The German Defence Ministry has downplayed the prospect of sending fighter jets to Ukraine, saying in a presser, "That is not an issue for us. This is not a debate at the moment." This comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed EU leaders at the 9 Feb extraordinary European Council summit in Brussels calling for Kyiv's allies to send jets to assist in the war effort.

  • Prior to his address to EUCO, Zelenskyy visited the UK to deliver a similar call. The British gov't has made no firm commitment on supplying Ukraine. In a presser PM Rishi Sunak said that UK jets are “very sophisticated pieces of kit” with training taking up to “three years”. However, he did add that the UK and Ukraine are “having that conversation”, indicating that the door may be ajar for future provision.
  • Poland has stated that it would consider supplying jets, but that it would not be the first to do so. As such, any German veto or reluctance to provide jets could see Poland's potential supply fall by the wayside.
