Germany May Be Forced to Burn More Coal

Germany is looking at options to burn coal in power plants to reduce gas demand and allow the country to build up gas reserves at a quicker pace ahead of next winter.

  • "That is painful, but it is a sheer necessity in this situation to reduce gas consumption," Economy Minister Robert Habeck said about the fuel switch. "But if we don't do it, then we run the risk that the storage facilities will not be full enough at the end of the year towards the winter season. And then we are blackmailable on a political level," he said.
  • Austria's government agreed with utility Verbund over the weekend to convert a gas-fired power plant to use coal should restricted gas supplies lead to an energy emergency in signs that coal demand looks set to grow across Europe as the region struggles to move away from Russian gas.
