Germany May Turn to Rail Due to Low Rhine

Germany plans to give the transportation of materials and equipment essential for energy production priority on the country's rail networks should water levels on the Rhine fall further and hamper shipping by river, according to a draft decree seen by news outlets over the weekend.

  • The decree said "The aim is to ensure the ongoing operations of power stations, refineries, electricity grids and other system-relevant infrastructure,"
  • The Rhine water level has been impacted by sustained hot temperatures, impacting the ability of barges to traverse inland.
