by Tom Lake

COVID-19 Trends and Developments

  • Brazil's total case load crossed the four million mark on September 3, with its recorded new cases coming in excess of 40,000 for the fourth consecutive day. While cases continue to rise sharply, the number of fatalities from COVID-19 has stabilised, with the average daily fatality count across the past seven days (852 per day) the lowest registered since May 20.
  • After peaking at 266,258 on September 1, the 7-day average daily case increase globally has fallen for the second day in a row. On September 3 the average daily increase across the preceding week registered at 264,595 cases per day.
  • For the fifth day in a row, France's daily caseload increase came in above 5,000 per day on average across the preceeding week. This is the first time since April 18, during the country's first wave of cases, that the daily case increase averaged across seven days has exceeded 5,000 for five consecutive days.
  • Spain's 7-day average caseload increase came in at 8,429 per day on September 3. This marks the fourth consecutive day in which the 7-day average new caseload for Spain has exceeded an average of 8,000 per day, the first time that this has occurred during the entire COVID-19 outbreak in the country. The significant spike in cases has not been matched by a major increase in fatalities, which have risen by an average 34 per day over the past week.
