Global Minimum Tax Would Put ‘Tens of Thousands of Jobs’ at Risk in CEE

  • French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said he is determined to get a European Union agreement on a global corporate minimum tax, setting up a clash with Hungary at a meeting of officials in Luxembourg on Friday (BBG).
  • Minister of Foreign Affairs Szijjarto mentioned in an interview that a global minimum tax on corporate profit would have dramatic economic consequences, particularly in CEE, leaving ‘tens of thousands of Jobs’ at risk.
  • Hungary will probably secure a Poland-style agreement with the EC this year, but still has ‘a lot of work’ to do.
  • Last week, the NBH surprised the market and hike its 1W depo rate by 50bps to 7.25% to continue its fight against inflation and support the HUF, which was hitting new all-time lows against the Euro and the USD.
  • Selling pressure on the forint remains elevated despite the NBH hike, with EURHUF oscillating around the 400 level.
