GOP Criticises White House Plan To Examine Further Oil Releases From SPR

US

Republican lawmakers have attacked an announcement from President Biden which has left open the possibiltiy of further drawdowns from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve if gasoline prices continue to rise.

  • House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) suggested that Biden is using the SPR to ease political pressure on Democrats: “The Strategic Petroleum Reserve was created for a time of emergency—this is a political emergency to the Democrats. That is why he is using it.”
  • Rep Pat Fallon (R-TX): "Here's an idea for Joe Biden -- instead of using our Strategic Petroleum Reserve as a political pawn, how about we restart construction [of] the Keystone XL Pipeline."
  • Democrat Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO) defended the measures: "High gas prices are squeezing Colorado families at the pump. I'm glad to see another release from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to help lower prices, and I hope [Biden] will act quickly to replenish the reserve to bring costs down."
  • The GOP has highlighted SPR drawdowns as part of an effective strategy to pin rising gasoline price on Biden administration policy.
