Annie Grayer at CNN reporting that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Republican leadership are in discussions to cut a measure to suspend the debt limit from a spending package that must pass by midnight tonight to avert a government shutdown.
- The reporting suggests that Johnson may carve the spending package into standalone bills, potentially setting up another clash with President-elect Trump who said in a statement yesterday: "Congress must get rid of, or extend out to, perhaps, 2029, the ridiculous Debt Ceiling. Without this, we should never make a deal. Remember, the pressure is on whoever is President."
- Gayer: "Discussions are underway among House GOP to drop suspension of national debt limit — despite Trump’s demands —... It’s unclear what final decision will be or if the latest plan can pass, given need for Dem support."
- Lisa Desjardins at PBS reports: "Per sources in meeting, w knowledge, etc — Speaker Johnson is moving toward a plan to divide the bill that failed yesterday (or similar) into separate votes... Trump is digging in on the debt tho, so there is a [question] of if he will accept that going (and failing) separately." Desjardins adds that a vote could still happen around 10:00 ET 15:00 GMT, "but it is not clear to folks I talked [with] that this deal, or next roll of dice, is ready yet."
- If Johnson tries to move a standalone debt limit bill it has little chance of passing the Democrat-controlled Senate, who criticised the move as a vehicle to expand unfunded tax cuts.
