GOP Leader McConnell "Amazed" Helping Ukraine "Has Become Controversial"

US

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has said in a speech in Kentucky: “I’m amazed that the whole question of helping the Ukrainians defend themselves has become controversial.”

  • McConnell's comments comes as the latest USD$250m security assistance package for Ukraine pushes total aid to Ukraine close to the USD$47b authorised by Congress last year and foreshadow another challenging process to legisalate another package before exhausting existing funds.
  • The non-partisan Congressional Research Service notes: "On August 10, 2023, the [Biden] Administration submitted to Congress a request for nearly $24 billion in FY2024 supplemental funding for Ukraine and other international needs. The request includes $10.5 billion in security assistance to Ukraine and other countries affected by the war, including $4.5 billion to replenish DOD stocks, $5 billion for USAI, and $1 billion in FMF."
  • The Hill reports: "Polls show a majority of Republicans are skeptical of providing more aide to Ukraine, but Senate Republican sources say they expect a majority of Senate and House Republicans to ultimately support another Ukraine package — though it will encounter opposition from conservatives in both chambers."
