Gov't Debates Electoral Law Changes, Dep PM Jurecka Stays On As Party Leader

  • iRozhlas reports that in the coming weeks the government will discuss changes to the laws regulating presidential elections as current rules leave some room for interpretation. Interior Minister Vit Rakusan suggested that considered amendments would allow each lawmaker to endorse only one presidential candidate, while the required number of citizens' signatures could be lowered. Note that in order to register for an election, a candidate must gather 50,000 signatures of citizens or be endorsed by 20 deputies or 10 senators. Last year's election saw a number of senators sign off under several candidacies.
  • KDU-CSL leader Marian Jurecka managed to cling onto his post at the latest party conference, while proposals to bring the next national convention forward to spring also failed. The party will hold its top brass to account only after the three upcoming elections. Last week's press reports suggested that the odds were high that the Deputy Prime Minister would be ousted, but he secured a conditional vote of confidence while vowing not to run for another term if he fails to achieve satisfactory electoral results.
