Governing BJP To Hold National Exec Meeting In Delhi 16-17 Jan

INDIA

India's The Hindu reporting that the governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of PM Narendra Modi is set to hold its annual National Executive meeting in Delhi on 16 and 17 January. Party President J.P. Nadda, whose three-year term in office is set to expire, is expected to be voted in for a second time according to party sources.

  • The meeting comes as elections approach (likely in February) in three states all governed at least in coalition by the BJP.
  • In 2022, the BJP lost power in Himachal Pradesh and saw its seat total decline in India's most populous state, Uttar Pradesh.
  • With the next general election to the Lok Sabha due by April-May 2024, the party will be keen to avoid poor performances in the nine state elections taking place through 2023.
