Government Looks Into Sweeping Electoral Law Reform

NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand's Justice Minister Kris Faafoi announced that the government is planning to pursue a major review of the electoral law and will look into issues including the voting age, funding of political parties, overseas voting, and the length of parliament's terms. Faafoi noted that the government will implement a number of "targeted changes" ahead of the 2023 general election, with a sweeping revamp of the electoral law due to follow before the 2026 poll.

  • The Justice Minister noted that a broad independent panel of experts will be appointed to help conduct the review. The panel will be explicitly told not to look into any "fundamental constitutional change," such as online voting, electoral system change (e.g. return to FPTP) or Maori electorate seats.
