Government Planning Another Round Of Industrial Relations Measures

AUSTRALIA

The Australian is reporting that the government wants to introduce a second wave of industrial relations changes that would ensure the same pay for the same job to prevent employment agencies from reducing pay for casual workers. They also want to introduce interventions to prevent wage theft, create a test to determine if a worker is casual and extend the Fair Work Commission’s remit to cover “employee-like forms of work”, such as the gig economy.

  • Businesses have already voiced concerns saying that it would reduce flexibility further and that this time there should be “genuine consultation” before any changes are legislated.
  • Business Council chief executive Westacott has warned that the changes passed are “already a massive disincentive for businesses that want to invest, employ or expand in Australia, we can’t afford to make the problem any worse.”
  • Independent Senator Pocock, who was key to passing the first set of measures, has said he is hoping that there will be “earlier engagement” from the government with this tranche.
  • Multi-employer bargaining comes into effect in June 2023.
