Governor Glapinski Begins Presser By Reaffirming Central Bank Independence

NBP

NBP Governor Adam Glapinski begins his press conference by emphasising that the NBP is a fully independent institution, pushing back against "attacks on the central bank." He says that external pressures, demands and accusations directed at the central bank are unprecedented and says that the NBP has not committed any significant mistakes in the recent years.

  • Glapinski says that the central bank relies on best possible information, adding that he has never defied MPC majority and never made any decision that would go against analysis provided by NBP staff.
  • The Governor makes a thinly veiled reference to criticisms directed at him by opposition politicians, calling them unacceptable, and says that he expects them to stop after the upcoming parliamentary election.
  • Glapinski has long been accused by opposition politicians of having close relations to the ruling party, while the MPC has been accused of bowing to political pressures.
