US: Governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer, has given her endorsement to former
VP Joe Biden ahead of the state's Democratic primary set for March 10.
- It is the most delegate-heavy state due to vote next week, and seen as a key
battleground state come the November general election.
- Latest poll from the state (carried out March 4) has Biden ahead 29% to
Sanders' 23%.
- Biden's strong appeal in 'rust belt' states likely to give him a boost in
Michigan. Large number of African American voters in Wayne County could also
give Biden an edge over Sanders.
- In 2016, Bernie Sanders secured a narrow 49.6%-48.3% victory over Hillary
Clinton in Michigan in the Democratic primary.
- Donald Trump unexpectedly took the state by just under 11,000 votes in the
presidential election. The state hadn't backed a Republican for president since
George H. W. Bush in 1988.
