NETHERLANDS
NETHERLANDS: Gov't of PM Mark Rutte loses its majority in lower House of
Representatives following dismissal of VVD MP.
- Rutte gov't, containing four parties, now holds 75 of the 150 seats, the same
as the 75 held by the opposition. Wybren van Haga, the MP dimissed from Rutte's
liberal VVD, will continue to sit as an independent.
- Rutte will require support from van Haga or other parties not in gov't to
ensure continuity.
- May require snap election if no majority can coalesce. Next election wasn't
due until March 2021.
- Rutte's VVD and Labour Party doing well in opinion polls. In the event of a
snap vote coalition talks would likely stretch on for several months.
