Greece-Bulgaria Interconnector Set for Operation This Month

NATURAL GAS

The Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB) has been completed and can start sending gas this month according to the Greek energy minister this week. The pipeline has faced long-delays and is designed to allow Bulgaria to cut its reliance on Russian gas.

  • The pipeline will carry gas from the northern Greek city of Komotini to Stara Zagora in Bulgaria and be linked to another pipeline carrying Azeri gas.
  • "It can be operational by the end of this month," Greek Energy Minister Kostas Skrekas said. "This will provide for sure a lot of security and a lot of gas to Bulgaria".
  • Romania has the opportunity to supply natural gas to Moldova and Ukraine according to its Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă after the commissioning of the Greece-Bulgaria interconnector on Thursday.
  • "In fact, this interconnector will connect the network passing through Anatolia and the Adriatic, as well as connect to the BRUA pipeline, thereby ensuring gas supplies to Bulgaria and Romania," he said,
  • He added "And, of course, we can provide gas supplies to our eastern partners – Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova and other countries according to the distribution scheme of this gas network,"
